QUICK ANSWER

Yes, within limits. Open Godot MCP lets an AI agent playtest a Godot 4.5+ game by freezing the game clock, stepping time forward, injecting keyboard, mouse or gamepad input, and reading game state as JSON. That makes it good for reproducing and verifying specific bugs, but it is scripted stepping, not real-time play, and it can't judge whether your game feels good. Eval is on and the bridge has no auth token by default, so lock those down before you use it.

Can an AI agent playtest your Godot game? With an MCP server like Open Godot MCP, it can, as long as "playtest" means scripted, frame-by-frame reproduction of a specific bug. It does not mean an agent watching a live video feed and reacting. This guide explains how the playtesting loop works, gives you a small planted-bug test you can repeat, and checks the announcement against the project's own docs.

What does "the AI plays your game" actually mean here?

On July 22, 2026, masteryee-labs posted Open Godot MCP in the Plugins category of the Godot Forum. The post describes a loop in which the agent plays the game, takes a screenshot, understands the frame, fixes what is wrong, generates new art if needed and tests again.

The GitHub README describes the mechanics more precisely:

  1. The agent starts the game with the game clock frozen.
  2. It sets up a scenario with godot_exec eval, for example by placing the player next to an enemy.
  3. It moves time forward with godot_game_time, either by a fixed step or with step_until, which runs until a condition is true.
  4. It injects keyboard, mouse or gamepad input with godot_input.
  5. It reads a JSON "digest" of game state with godot_runtime_state.
  6. It takes a screenshot only when the image is worth the tokens.

So the agent drives a paused simulation, one step at a time. Nothing is watched in real time. Because each run is deterministic, this design suits reproducing a bug ("press jump on frame 41, check velocity.y on frame 42") and then proving the fix with the same steps. It can't stand in for a human checking whether the controls feel right or a level is fun.

The forum post says JSON digests use about 90% fewer tokens than screenshots. That figure comes from the author, and no independent measurement has been published.

The README lists about 30 MCP tools covering roughly 130 actions. The project is MIT-licensed, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and supports GDScript and C# projects. For related coverage, see our Godot and coding agents pages.

What do you need, and which Godot version?

The installation guide lists:

  • Godot 4.5 or newer. The addon uses the Logger class, which arrived in 4.5.
  • Python 3.11 or newer, installed with uv (recommended) or pip.
  • Any MCP client that speaks stdio.

Check your version before you install. The Godot Asset Library listing (asset 5360) shows version 0.1.10 with Godot 4.3 as the engine version. That conflicts with the install guide. If you are on 4.3 or 4.4, follow the guide's 4.5+ requirement, not the listing.

The project also moves fast. The forum post announced v0.1.8. The releases page lists v0.1.10 as the latest release (July 23, 2026), and the Asset Library entry was submitted on July 24. With ten tagged releases in about a week, expect breaking changes between versions.

The docs are mostly in Chinese. The main README and the release notes are in Traditional Chinese, and a README_EN.md and other translations are linked. The install guide and changelogs are mostly in Chinese, and the guide's sample version output still reads 0.1.0.

How do you install it and connect your agent?

According to the installation guide:

  1. Install the server with uv tool install open-godot-mcp or pip install open-godot-mcp.
  2. Let the server inject the addon into your project on first connection. You can also copy addons/open_godot_mcp/ into the project by hand and enable it under Project Settings > Plugins, or run open-godot-mcp --install-addon <path>.
  3. Register the server with your client. The guide gives configs for Claude Desktop and Cursor (mcpServers JSON), Codex (~/.codex/config.toml) and Devin. For Claude Code it gives one command:
claude mcp add open-godot-mcp -- open-godot-mcp
  1. Ask the agent to run godot_health check to confirm the connection.

Lock it down before the first session

The security defaults are permissive. The guide lists these Editor Settings defaults:

SettingDefaultWhat it means
security/allow_evaltrueThe agent can run arbitrary code in your project
security/auth_tokenemptyNo authentication on the bridge
security/read_onlyfalseThe agent can write files
bridge/port6970Port the bridge listens on

In practice, any local process that can reach port 6970 can talk to the bridge, and the agent can run code in your project. The guide documents --no-eval, --read-only and --allowed-paths flags. Set an auth token, and use --allowed-paths to keep file access inside the project. There is a trade-off: --no-eval blocks the godot_exec scenario setup the playtesting loop relies on. Turn eval on only for sessions that need it.

The guide also says runtime/auto_inject adds a runtime autoload when the game launches, and runtime/strip_on_export (default true) should remove it from exported builds. Open an export and confirm the autoload is gone before you ship.

The test: one small game, one planted bug, one prompt

The forum post asks for honest feedback. The fairest way to judge the claim is a small, repeatable test with a known answer. Here is a protocol you can run.

1. Build a minimal project

Create a Godot 4.5 2D project with a CharacterBody2D player, a floor, one enemy and a score label. Add jump, move_left and move_right input actions.

2. Plant one bug

This player script ignores a jump pressed on the first physics frame after landing. was_on_floor holds the floor state from two frames back, so the check fails on the landing frame. Don't add a comment pointing at the bug.

extends CharacterBody2D

const SPEED = 200.0
const JUMP_VELOCITY = -400.0
var was_on_floor := false

func _physics_process(delta):
    if not is_on_floor():
        velocity += get_gravity() * delta
    if Input.is_action_just_pressed("jump") and is_on_floor() and was_on_floor:
        velocity.y = JUMP_VELOCITY
    was_on_floor = is_on_floor()
    velocity.x = Input.get_axis("move_left", "move_right") * SPEED
    move_and_slide()

Another option is an enemy that spawns overlapping the player. Pick one bug and keep it the same across runs.

3. Use a fixed prompt

This follows the README's own "AI fixes a movement bug" use case: set a breakpoint, run, inspect variables, fix, retest.

Bug report: pressing jump right after the player lands is sometimes ignored.

1. Reproduce it before editing any code. Launch the game with the clock frozen,
   set up the scenario, use godot_game_time step_until to reach the landing frame,
   inject the jump with godot_input, and read godot_runtime_state digests.
   Report the frame numbers and state values that show the bug.
2. Name the root cause, with file and line.
3. Apply the smallest fix.
4. Relaunch from scratch, repeat the exact same steps, and show the digest that
   proves the player now leaves the floor. Do not claim success without that run.

The agent may also use the optional DAP debugging tools (breakpoints, stack_trace, variables) and LSP diagnostics. Both are listed in the README and the forum post.

4. Score it

Count the run as a pass only if the agent:

  • reproduces the bug with stepped frames and digests, without editing code first
  • names the real cause (the stale was_on_floor check), not a symptom
  • changes the right file
  • verifies with a fresh run, not just a statement that it works

Also record how many attempts it needed and whether it fell back to screenshots.

Where is it likely to fail or cause problems?

The "free" AI APIs are optional, and they come with conditions. Release v0.1.3 added five tools that are off by default: agnes_vision, agnes_image_generate, agnes_video_generate, nvidia_vision and nvidia_image_generate (FLUX.2-klein-4b). According to the release notes, each needs API keys stored in ~/.open_godot_mcp/config.json.

Screenshots can leave your machine. The v0.1.3 notes say agnes_vision accepts only URLs and automatically uploads local files to uguu.se. The Uguu README describes the service as a lightweight temporary file host. If you turn this tool on, screenshots of an unreleased game go to a third-party host. According to the same notes, nvidia_vision sends base64 image data directly instead.

"Free" means free tiers on other companies' endpoints. The release notes say the plugin switches to the next key on 429, 402 or 401 responses and retries 5xx errors with backoff. Before you stack several keys, read each provider's current limits and terms. If you want image generation for game art, our sprite generators page covers other options.

Multiplayer testing looks tied to one project's layout. Running host and client instances with latency injection is the most unusual claim. But the v0.1.10 fix reads the ENet port from Data/CSV/game_settings.csv. Projects without that file fall back to the connect_to port, according to the release notes and the Asset Library changelog.

The project is very young. At the time of writing, the repo page showed 2 stars, 0 forks, 15 commits, 1 open issue and 1 pull request. The release notes report 62 passing tests at v0.1.10.

How does it compare to other Godot MCP servers?

The forum post presents deterministic playtesting as Open Godot MCP's main feature. The README's credits section names satelliteoflove/godot-mcp as the source for deterministic playtesting, cheap observation and the read/write split. Its own comparison table marks satelliteoflove as having deterministic real-game control.

The satelliteoflove README offers frozen-clock stepping, step_until, JSON state digests and in-game GDScript for scenario setup. Its boss-fight example workflow is nearly the same as the one in Open Godot MCP's README. Coding-Solo/godot-mcp focuses on launching the editor, running projects in debug mode, capturing debug output and managing scenes. Its feature list doesn't include input injection or clock control.

On paper, Open Godot MCP adds multi-instance network testing, DAP and LSP integration (credited to rosskarchner/godot-mcp), profiler access, optional image and video generation, and a Python server instead of Node.

Verdict: who should try it now?

  • Worth trying: solo developers on Godot 4.5+ who already use Claude Code, Cursor or Codex, want an agent to reproduce and verify bugs, and can live with early software and partly Chinese docs.
  • Wait, or use satelliteoflove/godot-mcp: anyone on Godot 4.3 or 4.4, anyone who wants a longer track record for the same playtesting loop, and anyone who can't send screenshots to third-party hosts.
  • Whichever server you pick: set an auth token, turn eval on only when you need it, and keep the AI image and video tools off until you've read the providers' terms.

The planted-bug test above is the quickest way to see whether the loop holds up on your own project. For more step-by-step guides, see Experiments. FAQ

Can an AI agent actually play and test my Godot game?

Within limits. According to the Open Godot MCP README, the agent freezes the game clock, steps time forward, injects input and reads game state as JSON. That works for reproducing and verifying specific bugs. It is not real-time play, and it can't judge game feel.

Which Godot version does Open Godot MCP need?

The installation guide requires Godot 4.5 or newer, because the addon uses the Logger class added in 4.5. The Asset Library listing shows 4.3, which conflicts with the guide, so don't rely on it if you're on 4.3 or 4.4.

Is it safe to let an AI run code inside my Godot project?

Only with the defaults changed. The install guide says eval is on, the bridge has no auth token and read-only mode is off by default. Set an auth token, use --allowed-paths, and turn eval on only for sessions that need scenario setup.

Does Open Godot MCP send my game screenshots to outside services?

Not by default. The optional agnes_vision tool, which is off by default, uploads local files to uguu.se, a temporary file host, according to the v0.1.3 release notes. The nvidia_vision tool sends base64 data directly to NVIDIA's endpoint instead.

How is Open Godot MCP different from satelliteoflove's or Coding-Solo's godot-mcp?

satelliteoflove/godot-mcp already offers frozen-clock stepping, step_until and JSON digests, and Open Godot MCP's README credits it for that design. Coding-Solo/godot-mcp focuses on running projects and managing scenes, without input injection or clock control. Open Godot MCP adds multi-instance network testing, DAP, LSP, profiler access and optional AI image tools.
